Another complication that may occur after a prolonged period in bed is the development of a clot in the legs
brought on by poor circulation. The major risk is that part of the clot might break loose and lodge in the lungs.
This is called a pulmonary embolism and is a potentially serious complication that can be prevented by walking
or by moving your legs, particularly the calf muscles, while in bed.
Other common complications in the postoperative period have to do with the operative wound. Infection can
set in around the incision, but infections can be easily treated and shouldn't cause you much physical or
emotional discomfort.
Late complications of surgery have to do with the scarring that is an inevitable part of the healing process.
Scarring in the abdomen can occasionally lead to a bowel obstruction or some other form of mechanical blockage.
